Hanna Bissiw leads task force to arrest 12 for illegal mining in Adobewora forest reserve

Dr. Hanna Bissiw, the Administrator of the Minerals Development Bank, led a major operation against illegal mining. This took place in the Adobewora Forest Reserve. The Atwima Nwabiagya South Anti-Galamsey Task Force arrested two Indian nationals and ten Ghanaians.

The operation occurred on Friday, May 30, 2025. During this time, the task force seized three excavators and four gold detectors. They also confiscated two pump generators and destroyed five makeshift mining equipment known as ‘chanfans.’

Dr. Bissiw did not disclose where the suspects were detained. However, she stated that those responsible for damaging the forest would pay for its restoration. “Now we know who the polluter is,” she said.

She emphasized that they would ensure accountability for the destruction of the Adobewora Forest Reserve. Dr. Bissiw noted that only unlicensed miners flee from anti-galamsey task forces.

In contrast, legal operators remain at their sites. “We went to AngloGold, and they didn’t run because they operate with a legal license,” she explained.

She stressed that the government supports responsible mining if it benefits local communities. “If you have a proper concession, mine responsibly to benefit the community,” she added.

Despite these arrests, some suspects managed to escape during the raid. Patrick Osei Boamah, District Chief Executive for Atwima Nwabiagya South, reaffirmed their commitment to protecting forest reserves.

He urged local chiefs and residents to support efforts against galamsey in their district. This operation is part of ongoing efforts by state agencies to combat illegal mining activities threatening Ghana’s forests and water bodies.
