Haruna Iddrisu signals new university coming to Kintampo

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, plans to propose a new bill in Parliament. This bill aims to establish a public university in the Bono East Region.

The university will be called the University of Health, Agriculture and Life Sciences. It will be located in Kintampo. The goal is to use existing educational resources to create an academic center.

During the inauguration of the Governing Council for SDD-UBIDS in Accra, Iddrisu spoke about this initiative. He stated that the university would help ensure every region has at least one major public university.

This vision supports President John Mahama's goal for balanced regional development. It also aims to improve access to higher education across Ghana.

Iddrisu emphasized the government's commitment to restoring original names of some universities. This policy aims to preserve their historical identities.

He acknowledged contributions from individuals after whom these institutions were renamed. However, he stressed that national pride and institutional legacy should not be lost.

Iddrisu criticized the renaming process during President Akufo-Addo’s administration. He described it as unusual globally and lacking public discussion.

Despite potential name reversals, he assured Ghanaians that deserving individuals would still be honored appropriately. This could include recognition through national awards.
