Haruna Mohammed, the Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reaffirmed the party's commitment to fighting drug trafficking in Ghana.
His remarks followed a failed attempt to arrest Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, the Assin South MP. This incident occurred on April 9 when the National Investigative Bureau (NIB) tried to apprehend him. The arrest attempt was blocked by the Minority in Parliament and key NPP members who supported Fordjour.
In an interview with Channel One Newsroom on April 9, Mohammed highlighted past drug-related incidents that harmed Ghana's image. He noted that some individuals involved are still part of the current administration.
Mohammed emphasized that the NPP is focused on protecting Ghana's global reputation. "We want a country free from drug-related issues," he stated. He recalled a major drug issue in 2014 during the same presidency.
He pointed out that in 2021, Ghana was removed from the drug trafficking blacklist under President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo's leadership. He questioned if they risked returning to that status due to insincerity.
Mohammed also mentioned that the UN has urged the government to assist with investigations into these matters.
