Heal Komfo Anokye Project advances to second phase

The second phase of the Heal Komfo Anokye Project is progressing well. This follows the successful renovation and handover of the A4 and A5 wards at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The $10 million project is led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Its goal is to restore the hospital to a modern state after years of decline. The newly refurbished wards are now in use by patients. Attention is now turning to fundraising for the next stage.

Mr. Kwame Frimpong, KATH’s Public Relations Officer, shared updates on Joy FM’s midday news on April 18. He explained that a strong maintenance plan will keep the refurbished wards in good condition.

“A key part of this project is a maintenance fund,” he said. “At least 10% of the initial $10 million will be set aside for maintenance.” He emphasized that there is a robust plan to ensure facilities remain in good shape over time.

Mr. Frimpong also outlined plans for future renovations. “All four old D blocks have not been renovated since 1955,” he noted. Once A4, A5, and A3 are completed, work will move to A2 and then A1.

After finishing the A block, renovations will continue with B, C, and D blocks. The upgrades aim to improve functionality as well as appearance.

“We are doubling or tripling washrooms and WCs,” Mr. Frimpong stated. “The facility was built 70 years ago when patient numbers were much lower.”

Other improvements include new window systems with mosquito-proof nets. “We are changing all window systems so they can accommodate mosquito-proof netting,” he explained.

Additionally, oxygen supply systems are being upgraded in the wards. “New oxygen pipes will ensure every bed has access to oxygen,” he added.

Mr. Frimpong stressed that this work goes beyond simple renovation. “It is comprehensive modernization,” he said about future projects.

Meanwhile, a fundraising dinner planned for supporting the next phase has been postponed.

“The event has regrettably been postponed due to circumstances beyond our control,” Mr. Frimpong announced.

He apologized to those who planned to attend and mentioned that schedules would need adjustment due to this change. The new date will be communicated soon in collaboration with Manhyia Palace.
