Healthcare services disrupted nationwide as nurses and midwives strike

Healthcare services in Ghana are facing serious disruptions. The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) is on strike. This has left many patients stranded and medical facilities struggling.

In the Ashanti Region, major hospitals like Manhyia, South Suntreso, and Kumasi South are affected. Key departments at Manhyia Hospital have completely shut down. Family planning and specialized clinics are closed, marked by red bands at entrances.

Dr. Adu Boakye, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at Manhyia Hospital, expressed concern about the situation. With nurses and midwives absent, doctors and house officers are overwhelmed with patients. The ongoing strike has disrupted healthcare nationwide.

Authorities have not yet resolved the issues with the striking nurses and midwives. Many patients remain uncertain about when services will return to normal.

In Hohoe, physician assistants at Volta Regional Hospital are managing the Outpatient Department (OPD). They are checking patients’ vitals as the nurses' strike continues in the region.

Courage Kumah, Regional Chair of GRNMA, urged the government to prioritize nurses' welfare. He emphasized that urgent action is needed to improve their working conditions. Mr. Kumah also warned against unauthorized personnel treating patients due to safety risks.
