Ghanaians are urged to stay alert as the rainy season peaks.
The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMET) warns of heavy rainfall ahead. Flooding remains a significant risk across the country.
Joseph Tetteh Portuphy, Deputy Director of Forecasting at GMET, spoke on JoyNews' AM Show. He explained the recent torrential rains that affected many areas on Sunday.
“We monitored moisture from the Guinea Coast during the week,” he said. “Convective activity was also present around Ghana. The system moved from south of Lagos and hit our coast around 4 pm to 5 pm.”
He noted that the storm was widespread, affecting more than just coastal areas. “There was another storm in the middle belt,” he added. “This is why we experienced lightning and thunderstorms.”
Mr. Portuphy expected intense rains due to high moisture levels and convection in the atmosphere. “We anticipated strong rains because of these conditions,” he explained.
He warned that prolonged rain could lead to flooding in some areas.
Looking ahead, Mr. Portuphy outlined where rain is likely in coming days.
“Today, along the coast, we expect less rain due to energy loss,” he said. “However, Axim will see some rain later.”
He mentioned that areas like Ho, Kete Krachi, Oda, Kumasi, and Techiman should prepare for heavy rain by late afternoon.
While Accra may not see immediate rainfall, northern regions like Bawku could experience showers today.
“The forested and mountainous areas will receive rain today,” he noted. “In Accra, expect more rain by Wednesday or Thursday.”
Mr. Portuphy cautioned everyone to prepare for heavy downpours soon.
“We are entering the peak of our rainy season,” he said. “People should be careful as June approaches.”
He emphasized that saturated land can lead to flooding with even slight rainfall.
