Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate for 2024, praised former President Akufo-Addo's eight-year tenure. He called it one of the best in Ghana's history.
Bawumia noted that many people criticize Akufo-Addo’s government. However, he believes it made significant contributions to Ghana's development. He stated that history will vindicate Akufo-Addo’s legacy.
During his ‘Thank You Tour’ on April 27, Bawumia highlighted Akufo-Addo’s leadership. He said future generations would appreciate his contributions to national development. “History will be kind to President Akufo-Addo for his bold decisions,” he remarked.
Bawumia acknowledged some criticisms of initiatives during Akufo-Addo’s time. Still, he emphasized these efforts laid foundations for long-term progress. He pointed out key achievements like Free Senior High School education and digitalization of public services.
“These are not just policies for today; they are investments for the future,” he said. He urged Ghanaians to continue supporting the NPP and assured them of greater progress ahead.
“We are grateful for your trust and pledge to work tirelessly for our nation,” he concluded.
During the tour, Bawumia also discussed reasons behind the NPP's defeat in the 2024 election. He cited hardship in the country and arrogance from his government as major issues.
He mentioned specific problems like the e-levy and debt restructuring program as contributing factors. “The studies show people complained about living costs and hardship,” he explained.
Bawumia added that suggestions were made to reshuffle ministerial portfolios but were ignored. “For eight years we never listened,” he lamented.
He also noted promises made by the president that were not fulfilled, such as no haircuts on debts. Many Ghanaians were unhappy when cuts occurred despite earlier assurances.
Additionally, Bawumia pointed out a lack of development in regions where they received majority votes, particularly in infrastructure projects like roads and markets in Western Region.
