The Ho Circuit Court has sentenced three people to 19 years in prison. They were involved in a violent robbery near the Ho Central Market.
The convicted individuals are Mercy Sokpe, 22; Atsu Kamasa, 25; and Godfred Dzidonu, 19. They were sentenced on Friday, May 9, 2025. All three pleaded guilty to conspiracy and robbery charges.
According to DSP Felix Danku from the Ghana Police Service, the incident happened on May 4, 2025. It occurred around 4:30 PM when they conspired to rob Elijah Torgbedzi, who is 21 years old. The stolen item was an iPhone 6s worth GH¢700.
Mercy Sokpe approached Mr. Torgbedzi under the guise of taking a selfie. Once she had his phone, she signaled her accomplices. They attacked him with scissors and fled with the device.
Mr. Torgbedzi raised an alarm immediately. This led to the quick arrest of Godfred Dzidonu, who had the stolen phone. Further investigations helped police find the other suspects hiding in Ho.
During court proceedings, all three accused admitted their guilt. Each received three years for conspiracy to commit robbery. Additionally, Atsu Kamasa and Godfred Dzidonu got five years each for robbery.
The Ghana Police Service praised the public's quick response during this incident. They reaffirmed their commitment to fighting crime in the region. The police also advised citizens to stay alert when approached by strangers for help.
DSP Danku emphasized that people should be vigilant and cautious of such requests. This sentencing highlights the risks of opportunistic crime and stresses public vigilance in aiding law enforcement efforts.
