Home search of Ernest Addison justified and lawful – Interior Minister asserts

Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka defended the search of Dr. Ernest Addison’s home. He stated it was lawful and conducted under a valid court warrant.

The search occurred on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. It has caused significant controversy and condemnation, especially from opposition figures and former central bank officials.

Reports indicate that about 20 armed operatives led by Richard Jakpa conducted the operation. They stormed Dr. Addison’s residence in Roman Ridge, Accra. Some officers wore masks and carried AK-47 rifles.

The team reportedly disabled the CCTV system before searching for “vaults.” Dr. Addison denied having any vaults or large cash holdings.

Despite their efforts, the operatives found no vaults or substantial money. However, they left with the home's CCTV monitor and control unit.

This incident has faced harsh criticism. One former central bank official called it “unprecedented and disturbing.”

In a speech to Parliament on June 3, 2025, Mr. Muntaka rejected claims of abuse of power. He emphasized that the raid followed legal norms.

He explained that an ex parte search warrant was filed before the High Court on March 12, 2025. This warrant was obtained according to established legal procedures.

“The search adhered strictly to due process,” he said. It was conducted in full compliance with state laws and in front of the former governor.
