Hostile political atmosphere in Volta is now a thing of the past -Letsa

Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa Reflects on Political Changes in Volta Region

Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, the former Volta Regional Minister, sees a positive shift in politics. He believes the hostile political atmosphere is now a thing of the past. People are more accepting of different political views and alliances.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Dr. Letsa noted that previously, everyone felt pressured to support the National Democratic Congress (NDC). In those days, expressing differing opinions could lead to violence. Now, members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) visit without fear of attacks.

Dr. Letsa shared his relief about leaving the Region in peace. When he took office in 2017, he faced the Alavanyo-Nkonya conflict, which caused him great stress. He often worried about reports of violence and loss of life.

He emphasized that resolving this conflict required teamwork from various groups. National Security, local leaders, and the Peace Council all played vital roles. Their collaboration helped bring stability to the area.

The disturbances caused by the Trans-Volta Togoland secessionist group were also challenging. Fortunately, they lacked support from local citizens. Most people were uninterested in their activities, which aided efforts to control them.

Dr. Letsa highlighted concerns about terrorism along the eastern border due to threats from Togo. This situation prompted security agencies to work diligently for regional safety and peace.

He also celebrated successes in promoting tourism in Volta Region. With help from organizations like the Ghana Tourism Authority and AGI, they launched initiatives like the Volta Fair.

The 2021 Volta Trade and Investment Fair was particularly successful. Dr. Letsa described it as "the biggest we have experienced so far." The fair boosted the local economy and attracted many visitors each weekend.

During his tenure, Volta Region won recognition as the best Regional Coordinating Council four times between 2021 and 2024.
