Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has questioned President John Dramani Mahama. He asked how Mahama plans to implement a 24-hour economy amid ongoing power outages, known as dumsor.
Dr. Bawumia called the NDC's 24-hour economy promise a joke. He noted that it is now absent from their policies and budget. He stated, “How can you have a 24-hour economy with dumsor at the same time?”
He emphasized that dumsor has worsened in Ghana. The NPP had warned Ghanaians about the connection between dumsor and the NDC. “Ghanaians didn’t listen, but we have been proven right,” he added.
Meanwhile, John Jinapor urged Ghanaians not to panic about potential power issues. Speaking to Parliament's Energy Committee, he mentioned needing $1.1 billion for liquid fuel procurement.
Jinapor explained that liquid fuel costs are not included in the tariff structure. He said they owe Karpower over $400 million and IPPs $1.7 billion. This situation is serious, with ECG facing a monthly deficit of about 2 billion cedis.
However, Jinapor reassured citizens on Citi Eyewitness News about the power situation. The government has procured 450,000 barrels of light crude oil arriving this weekend.
He confirmed they currently have 2.6 days of fuel stock but are receiving more soon. “We shouldn’t panic; we will be okay,” he assured listeners regarding any looming power crisis.
