Hubtel demands defamation retraction from Captain Smart

Hubtel, a leading Ghanaian payment services company, has demanded a public retraction and apology from Media General and Onua Maakye host Captain Smart over defamatory allegations.

On November 21, 2024, Captain Smart claimed on air that $25 million was transferred from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to Hubtel for funding the NPP’s political campaign, implicating Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Hubtel, through its lawyers, denied the accusations as false, malicious, and politically motivated, asserting its non-political affiliations and commitment to integrity.

The company demanded a retraction and apology within seven days or threatened legal action.

Hubtel emphasized the need to safeguard its reputation and public confidence amidst Ghana’s highly charged political climate ahead of the 2024 elections.
