‘Hunger and anger defeated NPP as Otumfuo’s warning was unheeded’ - Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu - MyJoyOnline

Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has recalled a crucial warning from Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in 2017, cautioning President Akufo-Addo that economic hardship and public frustration led to Mahama’s defeat in 2016—and could do the same to the NPP.

Speaking on Nhyira FM, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu admitted that the party failed to heed this advice, contributing to its poor performance in the 2024 elections.

He noted that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign lacked enthusiasm, and economic difficulties had eroded voter confidence. If elections had been held in August, he claimed, Bawumia might have secured only 30% of the vote.

The NPP’s loss was also fueled by perceptions of corruption, neglect of the Ashanti Region, and internal divisions.

As the party evaluates its future, he stressed the need for reforms to reconnect with disillusioned supporters. While Bawumia’s leadership remains uncertain, insights from all 16 regions will shape the party’s next steps.
