I'm grateful to Bryan Acheampong, he filed docs exceeding GH₵50m bail – Wontumi’s Lawyer

The lawyer for Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has shared important news. Former Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong helped meet the GH₵50 million bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

In an interview with JoyNews on May 30, lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi confirmed that all bail requirements are now met. Mr. Acheampong provided property documentation that exceeds the financial value needed by EOCO.

“We have provided the sureties,” Appiah-Kubi said. “I am very grateful to Honourable Bryan Acheampong for his support.” He added that Acheampong's documents surpass the required amount.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested over allegations of fraud and money laundering. He was granted bail with two sureties, but meeting those conditions took several days.

Just before the weekend, they secured the final surety. However, Wontumi remains in EOCO custody due to a new legal issue.

According to his lawyer, an application filed by unknown persons has delayed his release. “My client is not going home tonight,” Appiah-Kubi explained.

He noted there is a challenge that needs addressing before moving forward. “This application was not filed by me but it prohibits us,” he said. They plan to deal with it on Monday.

Appiah-Kubi also confirmed Wontumi’s health is stable and dismissed rumors of a hunger strike. He explained why a meeting with former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia could not happen.

“We tried to arrange this meeting but faced difficulties,” he said. “Wontumi's health requires attention, and he is receiving care.”

Wontumi’s arrest has attracted significant political attention. Top NPP officials like Dr. Bawumia and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin have visited him. Supporters have gathered at EOCO and NIB headquarters demanding his release.

Appiah-Kubi stated that unless the pending legal issue is resolved, Wontumi will remain in custody until Monday, June 2.
