Kwabena Adu Boahene, the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), insists he is innocent. He faces serious allegations of embezzling state funds.
On March 28, a court hearing reduced his bail from GH¢120 million to GH¢80 million.
When JoyNews’ Latif Iddrisu asked if he would be found innocent, Mr. Adu Boahene replied, "Definitely." He stated he has not been charged with anything yet.
He is accused of misappropriating $7 million meant for a cyber defense system. Allegations also include laundering funds through real estate investments.
Mr. Adu Boahene was arrested at Kotoka International Airport upon returning from London. His wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, was detained as well.
She is believed to be involved in a private company that siphoned state funds. In court, Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem Sai claimed she tried to destroy evidence during her husband's arrest.
Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine argues that the evidence against Mr. Adu Boahene is strong. However, his defense team, led by Samuel Atta Akyea, aims to clear his name.
Angela Adjei Boateng's bail remains at GH¢80 million with two sureties required. Both must report to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) three times a week.
Their travel is restricted and requires EOCO's permission. The couple filed a suit at the Human Rights Court claiming their bail conditions are excessive.
Samuel Atta Akyea argued that the bail amounts were designed to bypass constitutional limits on detention. On March 28, he made a case for reducing these conditions, which was granted.
Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem Sai countered that they are flight risks due to possible foreign passports in addition to their Ghanaian ones.
