I’ll ensure telcos pay for SIM card registration – Sam George

Minister Samuel Nartey George has confirmed that telecom companies will pay for the upcoming SIM card registration in Ghana. He spoke on The Point of View on Channel One TV on April 14. George emphasized that this process is crucial for improving the country's telecommunications infrastructure.

He plans to introduce a Legislative Instrument (LI) in Parliament to formalize this directive. "They [telcos] will pay for it. I will make them pay," he stated.

George criticized the previous re-registration process led by former Minister Ursula Owusu. He clarified, "I am not doing a re-registration. I am doing a SIM registration." His initiative aims to create a credible and centralized database using the Ghana Card as the main reference.

He noted that current SIM registration laws date back to 2010, when Haruna Iddrisu was Minister. At that time, the Ghana Card did not exist, so there was no reliable source of truth for registrations.
