I’m solving energy crisis, not grumbling – John Jinapor

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has responded to criticism. He dismissed claims that he is lamenting about power and fuel supply issues. His main focus is on solving these problems directly.

Critics include energy experts and Walewale MP Tia Abdul-Kabiru Mahama. They accused him of using “fear tactics” instead of showing effective leadership. Jinapor addressed this during an appearance on The Big Issue on May 17.

On the Citi Breakfast Show on May 19, 2025, Mr. Jinapor clarified his recent statements. He said his appearance before Parliament’s Energy Committee was not frustration. It was a chance to present facts and propose solutions.

“I understand grumbling very well,” he stated. “Presenting facts is not grumbling.” He emphasized the importance of transparency as a minister.

Mr. Jinapor outlined several interventions by the ministry. These include resolving a potential shutdown by Karpowership and expanding generation capacity. He also mentioned structural reforms to stabilize the sector.

“The facts are that Karpowership threatened to shut down,” he explained. “We resolved that issue; that is problem-solving.” He noted improvements since taking over, including reducing load shedding from 70-80 megawatts.

He provided statistics to the committee about challenges and solutions. For example, he discussed forming a gas processing committee to reduce reliance on liquid fuel.

“ECG wants private sector participation,” he added. “We have inaugurated a committee for stakeholder consultation.” This shows they are addressing challenges rather than complaining.

Regarding fuel stock levels, Mr. Jinapor assured Parliament that new orders were underway. “I provided updated data on our fuel stocks,” he said confidently.

He confirmed that new fuel orders would replace existing stock soon. “We are not in crisis; we are doing fairly well,” he stated firmly.

“Yes, we have challenges, but we were elected to solve them.” He concluded by emphasizing the need for solutions rather than scaremongering.
