Former Member of Parliament for Odododiodio, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has shared his struggles during his final term. He felt disillusioned and wanted to leave politics.
In an interview with GHOne TV, he called the 2020 to 2024 term the most disappointing of his 12-year career.
"I don’t miss Parliament. My last term was the most disappointing," he said. "I was eager for it to end."
Vanderpuye explained that he faced a conflict between his values and political demands. The expectations in Parliament often forced him to act against his conscience.
"There was a conflict between my principles and those of the House," he stated. "That conflict was sometimes too difficult to suppress."
He often left Parliament with many questions on his mind.
The former MP served three terms and described his internal struggles as a spiritual battle.
"Sometimes when I dressed up for Parliament, there was a battle within me," he reflected. "Do I have to be there? Do I have to go?"
Vanderpuye noted that his time in Parliament did not advance his political aspirations. This contributed to his decision to step away.
"I am one of the few who became disillusioned with Parliament," he said. "My political aspirations were never enhanced."
