I bought all my cars in Ghana and I don’t owe COCOBOD – Wontumi

Paul Adom-Otchere, host of Good Evening Ghana, shared a conversation he had with Bernard Antwi Boasiako. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and is known as Chairman Wontumi.

Wontumi faces accusations of misappropriating $45 million from a COCOBOD road contract. During his show, Adom-Otchere asked Wontumi why he took the money without constructing the road. He questioned, “What does that mean?”

Wontumi responded by saying COCOBOD does not pay in advance for roads. He claimed that payment comes only after construction is complete. He dismissed the allegations as propaganda.

Adom-Otchere then asked about some cars associated with Wontumi. Wontumi replied that he informed the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) about where he bought them. He insisted all his cars were purchased in Ghana and challenged anyone to prove they were stolen.

Wontumi was released from EOCO custody on June 2 after meeting bail conditions of GHS50 million. His arrest followed a visit to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on May 27.

His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, stated that Wontumi must return to EOCO for further questioning on June 4 and again on June 9, 2025.

The Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, announced that Wontumi is under investigation for fraud and money laundering. He also mentioned an international organized crime scheme involving Wontumi.

Justice Srem-Sai noted that EOCO is collaborating with international law enforcement partners on these investigations. The ongoing inquiry includes efforts to recover assets linked to suspected criminal activities.
