Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president, has issued a warning. He is also the NPP presidential candidate for the 2024 election. Bawumia cautioned Ghanaians about new taxes from the NDC government after the dumsor levy.
He criticized the NDC for introducing a dumsor levy that is eight times higher than the e-levy they scrapped. For example, sending 1,000 cedis via mobile money incurs a fee of 10 cedis under the e-levy. However, buying 1,000 cedis worth of fuel now costs an additional 83 cedis in taxes.
During his NPP Thank You Tour, Dr. Bawumia said many people are realizing the lies told by the NDC. He mentioned that they promised to scrap the e-levy but instead introduced a much higher dumsor levy. He warned that more taxes will come before 2028.
Meanwhile, John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister of Energy and Green Transition, clarified details about the new Energy Sector Levy. He stated it is not meant to pay legacy debts but to cover liquid fuel costs. Jinapor explained that these costs are not included in electricity tariffs.
In an interview on JOY FM, he emphasized that governance involves making tough decisions. He noted nobody enjoys imposing taxes on Ghanaians. Jinapor added that current electricity payments do not fund liquid fuel procurement.
He explained it takes about 18 months to two years to establish gas infrastructure. The finance minister has been assisting with liquid fuel procurement despite challenges. Jinapor outlined options like increasing electricity tariffs or sharing gains from reduced fuel prices as potential solutions.
