Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He recently spoke on live TV about his bank accounts being frozen by the Mahama-led government.
Chairman Wontumi expressed his distress. He said he cannot pay his children's school fees or buy food. He stated, “John Mahama, you have frozen my account. I am struggling.”
He questioned why he was targeted. “What have I done that you are coming after me?” he asked.
Wontumi mentioned that he was born in Ghana and will die there. He criticized a minister for holding a press conference about him regarding galamsey activities. He denied any involvement in those areas.
“I have a lease but do not work there,” he clarified. He challenged anyone to take him to court if they had evidence against him.
The Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) froze all of Wontumi’s accounts under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020. The freeze also affected Akonta Mining and Hallmark Civil Engineering Limited.
On May 23, 2025, the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and Ghana Police Service attempted to arrest Wontumi at his home. However, NIB withdrew their officers after NPP supporters gathered at his residence.
The reason for their presence remains unclear. Although the situation has calmed down, supporters continue to stay near Wontumi's home.
In an earlier interview, Chairman Wontumi questioned President John Dramani Mahama about freezing his accounts. He noted that he never served under Akufo-Addo’s administration and wondered why he was being attacked.
Wontumi claimed that the Mahama government personally hated him and accused him wrongly.
