I cannot remove 39% tariffs on data purchase by the stroke of my pen – Sam George to critics

Sam Nartey George is the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations. He has responded to calls for removing the 39% tariffs on data purchases.

Critics believe that data costs should be cheaper with a simple decision. Over the weekend, Sam George was trending on X. Many netizens pressured him to eliminate these tariffs to lower data costs.

In a post on X, he acknowledged the enthusiasm for advocacy but emphasized that facts matter. He explained that only the Minister for Finance can remove taxes or tariffs affecting government revenue. Until then, any changes depend on their approval.

He expressed appreciation for discussions with the Finance and Energy Ministers about future options. In the short term, he mentioned that regulators would implement policies for immediate effects.

A user on X challenged Sam George's statements. They pointed out his previous criticism of a former Minister who authorized a regulatory tariff through the NCA. They noted his promise to take action back then but questioned his current stance in office.

At an event on May 19, Sam George addressed concerns about data costs. He said people think prices should drop easily due to his position. He formed a committee tasked with creating a roadmap to reduce data prices within 14 days.

The committee delivered its plan in just 13 days. He acknowledged dealing with eight years of market distortion and stressed careful planning is needed for change.

He promised that by the end of this year, data prices would decrease and urged people to trust the process.
