Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, supports President Mahama’s directive. He has asked all government appointees to declare their assets. She believes this is a crucial step for transparency and accountability.
In an interview with Ghana Weekend, she shared her compliance with the directive. She took action even before her vetting process began. “As soon as my name came up, I got the asset declaration form,” she said. By the time of her vetting, she had already declared her assets.
Naa Momo emphasized that asset declaration is ongoing. It helps ensure public officials do not misuse state funds. If someone has assets before taking office, they cannot be accused of acquiring wealth while in office.
She suggested improvements to the system for future declarations. These should focus on actual holdings like bank statements instead of projections. While acknowledging that the process can be tedious, she stressed its importance.
“Refusing to comply could lead to dismissal,” she warned. Disobeying such a directive shows disrespect for leadership. She noted that although detailed information is required, it can be completed in a few days with effort.
