Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, denies illegal mining claims. He is the owner of Akonta Mining and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In a statement on Wontumi FM, he rejected allegations from Minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah. He called these accusations completely false.
“I challenge them that this is a lie,” Wontumi said. “I haven’t given anything to anybody. The best place to go is the court.” He insisted on his innocence.
Wontumi distanced himself from mining activities in Aboi Forest. “I have never worked in the forest before,” he stated firmly.
He added, “Anyone claiming I received money should prove it.” He emphasized, “I have never gone there to mine or been to Aboi Forest.”
Wontumi clarified that he does not work there and lacks a license. He noted that the Forestry Commission manages the forest.
His response followed Minister Buah's press conference on April 21, 2025. The minister announced plans to revoke Akonta Mining’s lease.
Buah alleged that Akonta Mining operated illegally in Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve. The company reportedly sold access to forest lands for GHS 300,000 per concession.
The minister also mentioned illegal gold royalties collected by the company. Investigations revealed collusion between forestry officials and security personnel.
This collusion allegedly led to environmental degradation in forest lands and water bodies like River Tano.
Due to these serious allegations, the Attorney General has been informed about potential legal action.
