I have never supplied guns to Mamprusis in the Bawku conflict – Bawumia defends

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate for the December 7, 2024 elections, has denied accusations regarding the Bawku conflict.

He called it unfortunate that people claim he supports his tribesmen, the Mamprusis. They allege he provided them with guns to attack the Kusasi ethnic group. This accusation has escalated tensions in Bawku.

While addressing NPP supporters during a ‘Thank You Tour,’ he said, “I hope you all heard what was said about me in the Bawku problem.” He criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for using this situation to spread lies against him.

Dr. Bawumia expressed shock that many Ghanaians believed these false claims. He noted that the NDC used this lie to gain about 39,000 votes in Bawku constituencies.

He stated, “Today, everyone in Bawku knows that the NDC deceived them.” He added that NDC MPs cannot even visit Bawku now due to this deception.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in several casualties, including children and families affected by violence along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway. Despite security forces' efforts to restore peace, armed attacks continue to instill fear among residents and travelers.

Violence has increased due to a long-standing chieftaincy dispute involving rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre. Abagre returned from exile after a High Court ruling nullified an arrest warrant against him on October 17, 2024.

In summary, Dr. Bawumia reflected on how false accusations contributed to the NPP's defeat in recent elections. He emphasized that these claims were unfounded and harmful to his reputation and political standing.
