The lawyer for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, provided an update. Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He remains in custody at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). His bail conditions have not yet been fully met.
On JoyNews’ The Pulse, Andy Appiah-Kubi spoke about the situation. Reports suggest former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia may help with a second surety. However, Appiah-Kubi stated he has no confirmation of this.
Wontumi was arrested four days ago on fraud and money laundering charges. He was granted bail set at GH₵50 million, requiring two sureties. So far, only one surety has been secured.
Appiah-Kubi expressed hope that both sureties will be filed soon. This would allow for Wontumi's release from EOCO’s custody by the end of the day.
He mentioned they considered asking the court to change bail conditions. They have already filed this application in court. Meanwhile, they are still waiting for the second surety and necessary documentation.
Wontumi has been unwell during his detention and is receiving medical care at a clinic. His lawyer dismissed rumors that he is on a hunger strike.
Appiah-Kubi also criticized EOCO's bail terms as excessive and unfair.
