I’m happy she’ll experience the justice system – Tamakloe on Torkornoo’s suit

Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has stirred legal and political debate. She has taken former President John Dramani Mahama to the Supreme Court. This action questions the legitimacy of her recent suspension.

On May 21, 2025, she filed a writ through her lawyer, Godfred Yeboah Dame. The writ seeks to overturn the presidential decision and declare it unconstitutional.

Justice Torkornoo claims that President Mahama's case against her was arbitrary. She argues it violated her right to a fair trial and is therefore void.

She demands a public hearing for the petitions against her. Additionally, she asserts her right to waive an in-camera hearing.

Torkornoo also challenges the committee investigating her case. She argues that two members have conflicts of interest and should not participate.

Edudzi Tamakloe, Director of Legal Affairs for the NDC, reacted positively. He called Torkornoo’s legal pursuit “quite refreshing.”

He noted that this application is interesting given its implications. Tamakloe expressed hope that she would receive fair treatment under the law.

He believes everyone deserves access to justice, including Torkornoo.
