Dr. Tony Aidoo, known for his sociological and political insights, shared his journey into politics. He spoke during an interview on the Urban Blend show with Blakk Rasta, monitored by MyNewsGh.
When asked if he always wanted to be a politician, Aidoo said no. “I wanted to be an academic,” he explained.
He revealed that former President Jerry John Rawlings influenced his political path. They had a personal relationship during the PNDC days. Rawlings helped him become a representative of the Central Region at the Consultative Assembly.
Aidoo has a strong academic background in sociology, economics, and international relations. He completed a PhD in epistemology, focusing on knowledge theory and global economic structures. “I wanted to understand why third-world countries remain poor,” he noted.
His entry into politics was not without challenges and disappointments. Aidoo expressed regret about Ghana's democracy over the past 30 years. “It hasn’t benefited the Ghanaian people,” he said. He criticized politicians who prioritize their own gain over citizens' needs.
Regarding his current role in government, Aidoo clarified that he is not active anymore. “I haven’t been given any appointment or specific role,” he stated. He shares his views based on conscience through media platforms when necessary.
Despite not expecting future political appointments, Aidoo cares deeply about Ghana’s future. He described the country’s democracy as selfish and lacking national loyalty. “People enter politics to enrich themselves,” he lamented.
In conclusion, Dr. Aidoo emphasized the need for societal change in attitudes. He urged voters to demand accountability from their leaders and called for greater transparency in governance.
