I oppose publishing asset declarations; it’s unhelpful – Kissi Agyebeng

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has rejected calls for public asset disclosures by officials. He believes this could be counterproductive and risky for individuals.

At a conference in Accra on June 6, he stated he does not support public scrutiny of declared assets. He said, “I do not and I will not add my voice to calls for publication.” He emphasized that such actions would lead to unnecessary public curiosity and potential reprisals.

Agyebeng suggested that a transparent framework is more effective. This framework should verify asset declarations and ensure compliance. He believes that publishing who has declared assets would suffice to maintain integrity.

His comments come as public demand grows for transparency among officials. Civil society groups often advocate for full asset declaration publication to deter corruption. However, Agyebeng stresses the need to balance transparency with individual rights in anti-corruption efforts.
