The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Sam George, has called an urgent meeting with Electronic Money Issuers (EMIs). This comes in response to rising mobile money fraud cases in Ghana.
On JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, April 15th, he expressed concern about this trend. He promised quick action to address the issue.
“The surge in mobile money fraud is unacceptable,” Mr. George stated. He mentioned that all EMIs would meet this week to discuss solutions. The meeting was initially scheduled for Thursday but has been postponed until after Easter.
Mr. George emphasized that the government will not ignore the problem. Ghanaians should not lose their money to digital criminals.
The meeting will focus on accountability and user protection measures. It will also address enforcing digital security standards among service providers.
“There will be consequences for platforms that fail to protect users' funds,” he warned.
He hinted at possible regulatory changes to improve the digital payment space. “We are reviewing regulations and may amend laws for stricter compliance,” he said.
Mr. George urged the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities quickly. “While the government is taking action, users must also be cautious and informed.”
