Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader in parliament, has made a statement. He will waive his parliamentary immunity. He plans to walk to the police regarding an alleged assault case involving a police officer.
On May 6, Afenyo-Markin spoke on Citi FM. He said he had been in Parliament all day. He checked with the Speaker’s Secretariat for any letters from the IGP's office. At that time, no such letter had been sent.
Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of this matter. He does not want to wait for a police invitation. Instead, he wants to cooperate fully and walk to the police.
He also mentioned that anyone handling the case can contact him directly. This is an open invitation for communication about the case. He wants to resolve this issue quickly without delays from the Speaker.
Afenyo-Markin believes that eventually, the truth will come out. He hopes this situation can be resolved peacefully.
On May 4, 2025, Afenyo-Markin was involved in an incident at a demonstration. During the "Save the Judiciary" protest by NPP and other parties, he punched a police officer. A viral video shows him trying to break through a police barricade when he hit the officer and called him a fool.
Reports indicate tensions rose when he was nearly denied entry into Parliament House for presenting a petition.
In response, Afenyo-Markin has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP). He claims Constable Forson assaulted him during the demonstration at Parliament House.
In his petition, he described Forson as tall and heavily built. Afenyo-Markin stated that Forson assaulted him while he approached a barricade.
To address what he calls misleading narratives, Afenyo-Markin shared details of the incident on May 5, 2025. He claimed that Constable Forson struck him forcefully on his chest near his heart as he approached to present his petition.
