Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader, has responded to a viral video. The video shows him punching a police officer during the Save the Judiciary demonstration. This event involved the NPP and other political parties.
Afenyo-Markin claims he was provoked by a Constable. He said the officer struck his chest without warning, leaving him dazed and short of breath. In the video, he is seen trying to break through a police barricade when he hit the officer.
Reports indicate tensions rose when Afenyo-Markin was almost denied entry to Parliament. He wanted to present a second petition to Speaker Alban Bagbin. In his statement on May 5, 2025, he described how Constable Forson hit him near his heart.
He stated that this assault was particularly serious. The officer was being reprimanded by superiors but did not care about Afenyo-Markin's status. Afenyo-Markin emphasized that their demonstration aimed to protect the Constitution and judicial independence.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has contacted Speaker Bagbin. They requested permission to release Afenyo-Markin for an investigation. This follows an inquiry into the viral video showing him hitting a police officer during the demonstration.
The Police have reviewed several videos related to this incident. They are inviting Afenyo-Markin to cooperate with their investigation. The involved officer will also assist in this process.
