IDEG empowers citizens on constitutional review process

The Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) has launched a new initiative. This program aims to boost civic engagement in Ghana’s constitutional review process.

The goal is to empower grassroots citizens. They will learn how to participate effectively in the review.

Douglas Quartey, a Development Consultant at IDEG, spoke at a workshop. This event took place at the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale.

The workshop was themed “Bridging the Gap: Citizen Engagement in Ghana’s Constitutional Review Process.” It aimed to strengthen governance and institutional reforms. Participants came from five regions in Northern Ghana.

Attendees learned advocacy techniques during the workshop. They focused on developing position papers to influence policy.

Mr. Quartey provided practical guidance on drafting these papers. He emphasized reflecting community interests and priorities.

“Tailor your communication to your audience,” he advised. This includes local assemblies, MPs, and community leaders. Clear and relevant proposals are essential for impact.

The workshop used an interactive format for group work. Participants drafted their own position papers together.

One first-time participant shared her experience. She felt nervous about presenting due to shyness but overcame it with support from teammates.

Funded by Oxfam, the workshop discussed citizen-driven recommendations. These recommendations aim to support ongoing consultations with the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC). The focus is on enhancing civic participation in shaping Ghana’s democratic future.
