IGP Yohuno Reactivates Regional Police Public Relations Offices

**IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno's Workshop for Police PROs**

The new Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has organized a workshop. This three-day event aims to improve communication skills for Public Relations Officers (PROs) in the Ghana Police Service.

The workshop took place at the Detective Training Academy in Accra. It included Regional and Unit Public Affairs Officers from across Ghana. The focus was on three key areas: transparency, professionalism, and consistency.

During his opening speech, IGP Yohuno highlighted the importance of police officers. He said they play a vital role in building trust with communities. “Effective policing is a partnership,” he stated. Officers must work closely with the public to ensure safety.

He also stressed the need for a strong communication strategy. This strategy will help maintain police legitimacy and boost public confidence.

**Strengthening Police-Media Relations**

A major point in IGP Yohuno’s speech was police-media relations. He emphasized that media engagement should be intentional and follow police directives. This includes Service Instructions No. 7 (S.I. 7), which guides these interactions.

He outlined three principles for PROs:

1. **Balancing Confidentiality and Transparency** – Protect sensitive information while being open.
2. **Maintaining Credibility and Integrity** – Interactions must meet high professional standards.
3. **Consistency in Messaging** – All offices should coordinate to deliver a unified message.

IGP Yohuno committed to revitalizing Regional Police Public Affairs offices. They will be equipped to tackle modern challenges like misinformation.

**Enhancing Police-Public Engagement**

The IGP noted that policing involves more than law enforcement; it includes accountability and community engagement. He urged officers to adapt their strategies based on public expectations.

Assistant Commissioner Grace Ansah-Akrofi expressed enthusiasm about the workshop's potential benefits. She believes it will equip officers with essential skills for better police-public engagement.

The workshop runs from March 20 to March 22, 2025, covering crisis communication, digital media management, and community relations strategies. With this new focus on proactive communication, the Ghana Police Service aims to enhance public trust and effectively maintain law and order.
