IGP explains how he defied intelligence warnings to enter Bawku amid violent attacks

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, recently visited Bawku. He ignored security advice against entering the area due to rising violence. He felt he could not abandon his men who were under attack.

On May 10, 2025, he spoke to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The IGP shared details about the tense situation in Bawku. “I visited Bawku when our men were seriously attacked,” he said. He noted there was a threat to their lives.

He received alarming intelligence while in Bolga. Reports indicated that the whole village was on fire. This prompted him to rush to Bawku despite warnings of danger.

“When I got to Bolga, I learned it would be hard to enter,” he explained. He questioned how he could stay in Bolga while his men were trapped. “So I persevered with my team and then we went.”

Upon arrival, the IGP met with the Bawku Naaba and sought peace. They discussed calming tensions among local people. He acknowledged that security officers might make mistakes and asked for forgiveness.

The IGP also mentioned efforts to manage tensions in Binduri district. This area has experienced increased violence as well.

“Military, police, and all other security are grateful for your intervention,” he stated. However, normal policing duties have been withdrawn from Bawku for now.

Officers with families have been redeployed elsewhere due to safety concerns. Currently, Bawku is strictly an operational zone.

“We are collaborating with National Security,” he added. Their goal is to find ways to reduce tensions in Binduri.

Meanwhile, violence continues in nearby communities. At least 12 houses were set on fire over the weekend in Gumyoko, Binduri district.

Sources from JoyNews report that more homes were burned just three days earlier. This brings the total number of torched houses to over 20 recently.
