The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, is in Bawku. He leads a team of operations, investigation, and intelligence officers. They are assessing the security situation in the area.
This visit follows a violent clash between youth and police. During this confrontation, one person named Fuseini Iddrisu lost his life. Five others were injured, including a police officer and an immigration officer. They are currently receiving medical treatment.
Calm returned to Bawku on April 9, 2025. This was due to a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces. However, tensions rose again on April 10.
On that day, agitated youth set fire to the home of MP Mahama Ayariga. The incident took place in Wiidi, a suburb of Bawku. Initially, youth attacked the residence with stones and broke windows. The situation escalated into an arson attack the next morning.
The violence reportedly stemmed from anger over a young man's death at police hands. On April 10, the Ghana Police Service released a statement about their plans in Bawku. The IGP will meet with the deceased's family and visit those injured.
The police also plan to reach out to officers who lost property during the violence. They assured the public of ongoing collaboration with various stakeholders for peace and security in Bawku.
