IGP heads to Bawku after irate youth allegedly torch Ayariga’s house

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, is visiting Bawku. He leads a team of operations, intelligence, and investigations officers. They are assessing the tense security situation in the area.

This visit follows violent clashes between youth and police officers. These clashes resulted in the death of Fuseini Iddrisu. Five others were injured, including a police officer and an immigration officer. They are currently receiving treatment.

On April 9, 2025, the Ghana Police Service and Armed Forces restored calm in Bawku. However, tensions flared again on April 10. A group of youth set fire to the residence of MP Mahama Ayariga in Wiidi, a suburb of Bawku.

The attack began with stones thrown at the building. This shattered windows and caused damage before escalating into arson.

The unrest is believed to stem from public anger over the alleged police killing of Iddrisu.

On April 10, the Ghana Police Service issued a statement about the IGP's visit. He will express condolences to Iddrisu's family and check on the injured at the hospital. The IGP will also engage with officers who lost property during the chaos.

The Police assured the public they will work with traditional leaders and other stakeholders to maintain law and order in Bawku.
