The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has launched operations against illegal mining. This crackdown targets galamsey activities in the Western, Ashanti, and Central Regions.
The operation began earlier this week and resulted in 30 arrests. The suspects were taken from various towns known for destructive mining practices. Some of these activities occurred near homes and major highways.
In the Western Region, a significant operation took place at Huniso. Thirteen individuals were arrested there and remanded by the Tarkwa Circuit Court. They are set to reappear on June 6, 2025.
In the Ashanti Region, ACP Joseph Nyaaba led a raid near Asare Bediako Senior High School. Nine suspects were arrested for using explosives that damaged school property.
Another raid happened on May 29 at Dunkwa-On-Offin in the Central Region. Superintendent David Ashong and ASP Emmanuel Bruce led officers to arrest two miners operating excavators by the River Offin.
A separate operation occurred at Wassa Dadieso, where deep mining pits are close to homes. Chief Superintendent William Jabialu commanded a team of 82 personnel who arrested several illegal miners.
The police also targeted nearby Wassa Gyapa, another galamsey hotspot. They destroyed over 135 chanfan machines and impounded one motorbike during this operation.
Six more suspects were arrested despite challenging terrain conditions. All suspects from these operations are currently in police custody for further investigation.
They are expected to be formally charged soon. The police plan additional operations to combat illegal mining and its environmental impacts.
