The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has launched operations against illegal mining. This crackdown targets galamsey activities in the Western, Ashanti, and Central Regions.
The nationwide operation began earlier this week. It resulted in the arrest of 38 suspects from various hotspot towns. These towns are known for destructive mining practices near homes and highways.
One major operation took place at Huniso in the Western Region. Thirteen individuals were arrested there and remanded by the Tarkwa Circuit Court. They are scheduled to reappear on June 6, 2025.
In the Ashanti Region, a police team raided an illegal site near Asare Bediako Senior High School. The raid was led by ACP Joseph Nyaaba and resulted in nine arrests. The suspects were using explosives that damaged school property.
Another raid occurred on May 29 at Dunkwa-On-Offin in the Central Region. Superintendent David Ashong and ASP Emmanuel Bruce led 20 officers to the River Offin bank. They arrested two illegal miners, Samuel Ankamah and Daniel Agyeman, who were operating excavators.
A separate operation took place at Wassa Dadieso, known for dangerous mining pits. Chief Superintendent William Jabialu commanded a force of 82 personnel there. Several illegal miners were arrested during this operation.
The police then moved to nearby Wassa Gyapa, another galamsey hotspot. They destroyed over 135 chanfan machines and impounded one motorbike. Six more suspects were arrested despite difficult terrain.
All suspects from these operations are currently in police custody. They are assisting with ongoing investigations and will be formally charged soon.
The police plan further operations to combat illegal mining and its environmental impacts.
