The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has started reshuffling police commanders. This change affects areas known for illegal mining, or galamsey. The focus is on Divisional and District Commanders in the Eastern South, Western, and Western North regions.
This reshuffle is part of a larger effort to improve policing. The IGP aims to bring new energy and accountability to the fight against galamsey. A police statement noted that more changes are expected soon.
In related news, the Ghana Police Service has made significant progress against illegal mining. They conducted a four-day intelligence-led operation starting on April 17, 2025. This operation took place in the Samreboi enclave of the Western Region.
During this operation, police arrested 47 people for illegal mining activities. The suspects include 39 Ghanaians and eight Chinese nationals, along with four women. They were apprehended along the Tano River and in nearby forests.
Police recovered several items during the operation:
1. Seventeen excavators
2. One bulldozer
3. Four motorbikes
4. Two Toyota Hilux vehicles
5. One Rav4 vehicle
6. Four pump-action guns
7. One single-barrel gun
8. Fifty-four live BB cartridges
9. Eight pumping machines
All suspects are currently in custody and will face legal proceedings.
