IGP reshuffles commanders in galamsey areas as crackdown on illegal mining intensifies

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has reshuffled Police Commanders. This change targets areas affected by illegal mining, known as galamsey.

This move aligns with his commitment to combat illegal mining activities. It is the first phase of a larger strategy to enhance enforcement efforts.

The reshuffle impacts several Divisional and District Commanders. It particularly affects the Eastern South, Western, and Western North regions.

More command changes are expected in the coming weeks. This is part of a campaign to strengthen operations against galamsey.

The reshuffle addresses challenges from illegal mining. These include environmental damage and threats to national water bodies.

In a related operation, the Police Service achieved a significant breakthrough. A four-day anti-galamsey operation took place from April 17, 2025.

This operation occurred in the Samreboi enclave in the Western Region. It led to the arrest of 47 individuals involved in illegal mining.

The arrests happened along the Tano River and nearby forests. These areas are known for intense galamsey activities.

Among those arrested are 39 Ghanaians and 8 Chinese nationals. Four women were also included in this group.

The Police seized many items used for illegal mining activities. These include 17 excavators, one bulldozer, and four motorbikes.

They also confiscated two Toyota Hilux vehicles and one Rav4 vehicle. Additionally, they recovered four pump-action guns and one single-barrel gun.

Other items seized include 54 live BB cartridges and eight pumping machines. These will serve as evidence during prosecution.

All arrested individuals are currently in Police custody. They will be processed through the legal system soon.

The Ghana Police Service remains committed to enforcing laws against illegal exploitation. The IGP urges public cooperation to help eradicate galamsey.

He emphasizes the importance of preserving the environment for future generations.
