The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has issued a warning. He urged Regional Commanders of the Ghana Police Service to act against illegal mining, known as galamsey.
Mr. Yohuno highlighted the security risks posed by illegal mining. It is particularly dangerous in forest reserves and mining communities. In regions like Western North, armed criminals have attacked innocent people. This includes assaults on forest guards without cause.
He made these remarks at the Ghana Police Regional Command conference. The event took place at police headquarters in Accra on Friday. Attendees included Regional Police Commanders and members of the Police Management Board. Senior Police Officers and officials from the Ministry for the Interior were also present.
