Ibrahim Adjei, a former Assistant Secretary under President Akufo-Addo, criticized President John Dramani Mahama. He took issue with Mahama's comments on prosecuting illegal miners. Adjei warned that such remarks could weaken the fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey.
On Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, Adjei emphasized the need for strong political will. He stated that consistency is crucial, regardless of who is in power. He pointed out how political messaging can either help or hinder efforts against illegal mining.
Adjei referred to Mahama's statement from October 2023. The former president suggested he would not prosecute illegal miners due to their connections with powerful individuals. Adjei argued this sends a troubling message about escaping punishment.
He said, “That kind of language does not help.” He believes it implies that offenders might avoid jail if they have influential friends. “Crime is crime,” he added, stressing the need for a firm stance against it.
His comments followed Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah's announcement. The government is now using chassis numbers from seized excavators to trace owners. This initiative is part of a renewed effort to combat the galamsey problem.
Additionally, Elvis Darko urged the Kwahu Business Forum to stop talking and take action against illegal mining.
