Businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama has stepped in to help. He will cover the full medical costs for Baby Phoebe Gimelle Oware Oguh. She is a 1-year-7-month-old girl diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
Phoebe is currently being treated at the Paediatric Oncology Unit. This unit is located at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
A letter from Dr. Michael Akpoke, dated January 10, 2025, confirms her situation. While she is receiving initial care locally, she needs further treatment abroad. This includes a bone marrow transplant that is not available in Ghana.
Phoebe’s mother, Victoria Amissah, appealed for funds to raise $78,620. This amount was needed for treatment at Apollo Proton Cancer Centre in Chennai, India. Ibrahim Mahama generously provided the full amount.
The estimated cost covers chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. It also includes travel and accommodation for Phoebe and her mother.
Arrangements are being made for Phoebe to travel to India soon. The Apollo Proton Cancer Centre is ready to receive her and start treatment.
Phoebe’s case highlights the need for better pediatric cancer options in Ghana. It shows how individual support can help access specialized care when it’s unavailable locally.
