Ibrahim Mahama sues Bright Simons for GHC10 million over alleged defamation

Business magnate Ibrahim Mahama and his company, Engineers & Planners (E&P), have filed a defamation suit. They are seeking GHS10 million in damages from policy analyst Bright Simons.

The writ of summons was filed at the Accra High Court. It accuses Mr. Simons of publishing false statements that harmed their reputation and business.

The plaintiffs claim that Mr. Simons made defamatory assertions on his website and social media. He suggested that E&P is financially distressed due to Gold Fields' temporary suspension of mining operations at the Damang Mine.

They argue that Mr. Simons’ claims are baseless. He alleged that E&P’s creditors are upset and that Mr. Mahama influences mining policy for personal gain.

The suit states these comments imply Mr. Mahama is using his family ties to gain unfair advantages in business. The plaintiffs believe these statements have damaged their reputations and raised concerns among partners and financiers.

They also claim the publications were made with malice, intending to harm their public standing.

In addition to GHS10 million in damages, the plaintiffs seek several remedies:

1. A declaration that the statements are defamatory.
2. A court order for Mr. Simons to publish a full retraction and apology on his platforms.
3. An apology published in the Daily Graphic for six consecutive days.
4. A perpetual injunction against further defamatory statements.
5. Legal costs and any other relief deemed appropriate by the court.

The suit notes attempts were made to resolve this matter amicably. On April 22, 2025, their lawyers demanded a retraction and apology, which Mr. Simons did not provide.

This case is now before the High Court and will explore public commentary limits regarding defamation involving high-profile figures in Ghana's corporate landscape.
