Idris Elba honoured by Ga King, unveils plans for world-class film studio in Accra

Idris Elba, a renowned British actor and filmmaker, has been honored in Ghana. King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II recognized him as a son of the Ga land.

Elba's visit took place on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. A grand ceremony was held at the Ga Mantse Palace in Accra. The event celebrated his contributions to the African diaspora and Ghana’s creative industry.

Justice Naa Yaale welcomed Elba. She is the Chief of Staff to the Ga Mantse and daughter of independence hero Ako Adjei.

The ceremony featured vibrant drumming, dancing, and displays of Ga traditions. Elba spoke about his passion for revitalizing Africa’s film industry.

He stated, “One of my goals is to bring the industry back to Africa.” He announced plans for a studio and school on 22 acres beside Osu Castle. This facility will serve the community in Accra.

Elba aims to create a world-class film studio that trains young Ghanaian creatives. He wants to position Ghana as a leader in African cinema.

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II praised Elba’s initiative. He highlighted its importance for shaping Ghana’s youth.

“Our children lack direction,” he said. “We need these tools.” The king emphasized support for the studio project to advance creative arts in Ghana.

The event attracted key figures from Ghana’s entertainment industry. Notable attendees included actors George Nii Armah, Chris Attoh, Kalsoume Sinare, and Adjetey Anang. They expressed enthusiasm for the proposed film hub.
