Vincent Ekow Assafuah, MP for Old Tafo, has issued a warning. He cautioned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) about future bail conditions. If the New Patriotic Party (NPP) returns to power, they may set a GH¢1 billion bail.
Assafuah stated that even if it takes 20 years, the NPP will act similarly. He noted that young people are observing everything happening with Chairman Wontumi.
The lawmaker, who is also a lawyer, said an NPP government would impose steep bail on NDC appointees facing legal issues. During a panel discussion on Hello FM, he expressed concern over the current political climate.
He asked why the country is becoming undemocratic. Assafuah emphasized that power is temporary and urged the NDC to be cautious. He questioned how state institutions could disrespect figures like Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
His comments followed Chairman Wontumi's arrest by EOCO after visiting CID headquarters on May 27. Wontumi was granted bail of GH₵50 million with two sureties on May 28 but faced delays in his release.
On May 30, his legal team filed a motion at the High Court in Accra for a hearing scheduled for June 3. However, they withdrew this application on June 2 due to complications.
Wontumi’s legal team revealed that despite meeting bail conditions, his release was stalled by another legal application. They encountered challenges but planned to address them promptly.
As of June 2, 2025, Chairman Wontumi has been released from EOCO custody after meeting his bail conditions.
