If NPP takes credit for the cedi’s rise, they must accept blame for dumsor – Afia Korankyewaa

A member of the Movement for Change has made a statement. She said if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) wants credit for the cedi's rise, they must also accept blame for the power crisis.

Her comments were reported by Kasapa FM. The Ghana cedi has been gaining against major currencies, especially the US dollar.

As of May 19, 2025, the cedi is trading at GH¢12.3 to one dollar. Dr. Dickson Adomako-Kissi, a former MP, attributed this appreciation to NPP's efforts. He stated that their work led to the current gains.

However, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticized NPP's claims. He accused them of being desperate for credit while ignoring their role in past failures. Kwetey compared NPP’s actions to burning down a house and then seeking praise for bringing water.

Kennedy Agyapong, a former MP and NPP flagbearer aspirant, also weighed in on the issue. He claimed that recent cedi appreciation is temporary and not due to any economic experts in Ghana.

Agyapong explained that global market conditions are affecting demand for dollars. Speaking at an event on May 15, he emphasized that supply exceeds demand right now.

He warned against attributing this situation solely to interest rates or local economic policies. Agyapong noted that basic economic principles are at play due to changes in the world economy.

In summary, if NPP takes credit for the cedi’s rise, they must accept blame for dumsor as well.
