If SC reasoning does not hold water I will file for a review – Assafuah on ruling on CJ’s suspension

Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the MP for Old Tafo, plans to file for a review. This will happen if the Supreme Court's reasoning on the Chief Justice removal case is unsatisfactory.

On May 6, 2025, the Supreme Court dismissed an application. The application sought to stop the removal process of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. The court ruled in a narrow 3-2 decision against Assafuah’s request.

Assafuah was represented by lawyer Godfred Yeboah Dame, a former Attorney General. Dame objected to changes in the original panel of justices. He also asked acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to recuse himself from the case.

The Supreme Court rejected Dame's objection unanimously. They stated that his concerns did not disqualify Baffoe-Bonnie from presiding over the case. The justices assured that due judicial process would be followed.

Baffoe-Bonnie and Justices Yonny Kulendi and Amadu Tanko dismissed the injunction request. Justices Henrietta Mensa Bonsu and Ernest Gaewu dissented against this majority decision. The full reasoning of the Supreme Court will be released on May 21, 2025.

After the ruling, Assafuah spoke on Channel One TV. He said he would review the court's reasoning once it is available. If it holds water, he will accept it; if not, he may file for a review.

He noted that two judges agreed with his position during the ruling. This gives him some indication that he might return to court again.
