If it’s gone, it’s gone – Seth Acheampong on E-levy scrapping

Former Eastern Regional Minister Seth Acheampong supports the government's decision to remove the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), Betting Tax, and Emissions Tax. He believes this aligns with the country's best interests.

On Breakfast Daily, Acheampong discussed the original goals of the E-Levy. He recognized its shortcomings and noted that it faced strong public opposition.

He stated, “As an administration, we introduce taxes to support our vision.” Initially, he thought the E-Levy was a positive step. However, he acknowledged that public resistance hindered its success.

Acheampong pointed out that many challenges arose during its introduction. These issues prevented the tax from performing as expected or generating needed revenue.

With the tax now abolished, he sees a chance for better revenue strategies. “Its removal is quite welcoming,” he said. He hopes for more creative ways to generate funds for the country.

His remarks follow President John Dramani Mahama's signing of bills to scrap multiple taxes. This decision has received mixed reactions from various sectors of the economy.
